Ashes of Time

Shot in Mainland China, this perversely lavish, self-consciously new wave martial arts film...is a languorous, sultry, sensuous action reverie. Accompanied by wailing flutes or solo electric guitar, it's set in a desert wilderness populated by a gang of angst ridden, lovelorn swordsmen-for-hire. One is going blind, another turning amnesiac, the rest are haunted by their various memories. The names Kurosawa and Leone come tripping to the tongue in attempting to describe this brooding mlange of extreme tilts and outlandish angles...Ashes of Time is mostly anticipation with sudden inexplicable episodes of slo-mo zap blurs of martial art tumult, as well as mystically congruent earthquakes and geysers. Just as the flickering network of shadows efface the identities of Wong's swordsmen and women, the complicated plot is nearly overpowered by the film's anticipatory buildup, convoluted flashbacks, and cathedral lighting.

36th Chamber of Shaolin (aka Master Killer; Kung)

Revered Hong Kong director Chia Liang Liu (AKA Kar Leung Lau) and martial artist Gordon Liu are half brothers, who worked together on several Shaw Brothers' classics. Chia Liang Liu cast Gordon as the lead in the 1978 epic, SHAO LIN SAN SHIH LIU FANG, which translates roughly to THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN. This phenomenal Shaw Bros. film was even a bigger hit than FIVE DEADLY VENOMS, and is a reference point for the hundreds of martial arts film that followed. You notice how nearly every martial arts film (American ones included) include a sequence about a student learning the martial arts through a rigorous training regimen? Well, all those movies can be traced back to this classic. In 1979, A distribution company called World Northal released the film in America as MASTER KILLER. Crash Cinema took it one step further and released it as SHAOLIN MASTER KILLER for the widescreen DVD release.

Chia Lang Lui's inspired direction makes SHAOLIN MASTER KILLER truly special. He imbues the film with a sense of realism not normally associated with the genre. For instance, most plots of these films are revenge motivated. The lead character usually learns Kung Fu in a very short time and then searches out the evil opponent who killed their parent/sibling/spouse/children, etc. Though San Te eventually gets his revenge, he is motivated by his desire to bring Shaolin Kung Fu to the common man. Chia Lang Lui takes his time and films the training sequences in a convincing manner. Gordon Liu is a genuinely good actor on top of being a great martial artist. His performance does not get lost in the translation. His character is overcome by despair, anger, and sadness and you can see it clearly in his eyes and facial expressions. Liu evokes laughter from the audience one minute, then uplifts them the next. Lo Lieh plays his usual evil character, this time Manchu enforcer Lo Tang. Except for the beginning of SHAOLIN MASTER KILLER, where action fans may become restless, Liu Chia Liang produces one engrossing period film that is far more than just a Kung Fu movie.

The Emperor's Shadow

At the time, the most expensive Chinese film ever made, The Emperor's Shadow features celebrated actors Jiang Wen (Ying Zheng), Gao Jianli (Ge You), and Xu Qing (Ying's daughter, Yueyang). The film's been called "the most lavish, eyeball-searing Sino-spectacle to date." (San Francisco Bay Guardian).

The film shows what hubris can do to people in high places, where pride goeth before the fall (to paraphrase an old saying). China's first emperor, played by Jiang Wen, is trying to build a kingdom by defeating all others to unify, united under his rule. He feels a national anthem is necessary to bring the people around to the idea of one ruler, one nation. To carry out this plan, he defeats and then recruits Ge You to compose the anthem. The two share a moment together as children--a bond that they later rekindle as adults.

What develops is the intriguing part of the film. We see the emperor steadfast in his belief that he is the one to bring order. Killing to control people is a tool he uses with great abandon. He doesn't think twice when exercising his authority. His "shadow," Ge You, is wholeheartedly against him on all fronts, fearing and loathing his subjugation.

The dialogue is sharp and to the point. The actors are uniformly excellent. The film has a very modern feel to it even though depicting an age far removed from today. What makes this film so compelling is its portrayal of people with idiosyncracies, mood swings, self absorption, stubbornness. Basicsally, presenting people with their faults. And it is through their faults that they define themselves. A major point that is presented in the film is how blind, to things and surroundings, a person may become when trying to attain one's goal, no matter what that might be.

Winner of the Best Director prize at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Wong Kar-Wai's Happy Together is a cinematic balancing act, a stunning display of filmmaking style and a touching love story evenly mixed into one film. Hong Kong and world cinema have never seen anything quite like it.

Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung, two of Hong Kong's biggest stars, play a pair of gay lovers living out the waning days of their relationship as expatriates in Buenos Aires. Together with Australian Christopher Doyle, Kar-Wai's longtime cinematographer, the director discovers a city rich with diverse cultural influences. Happy Together reveals a corner of the world alive with intimate colors and an astounding array of sounds. Even more striking, though, is the way that such an international collaboration brings to life a romance that is both realistic and universal. Ho and Lai are characters who are instantly identifiable, who play the roles and experience the dynamics that all couples go through in the course of a relationship. Lusty tango bars, the salsa music of the La Boca sidewalks, and a hypnotic visit to the nearby Iguazu Falls give further dimension to the tensions growing between the two lovers.

Sex and Zen 3 leaves other erotic film efforts seriously lacking. Director Aman Chang has created a genuinely entertaining, lavishly shot, and outrageously explicit tale, all with an eye for tongue in cheek humour.

In Sex and Zen 3, sex is amusng, explicit, sensuous, colourful, unconventional, adventurous, and above all - plentiful

The Sex And Zen trilogy owes much of its success to a certain scene in the first film involving two women and a flute. Part Three continues the sexual lust, this time with three main characters.

Fanny , Susan and Chunyin - all from poor families - are sold to Madame Kau's Golden Palace brothel, securing their families' financial wellbeing. As virgins, they are showcased by Golden Palace, drawing noblemen and merchants willing to part with their hard earned taels for pleasure.

As with each of the films thus far, these characters are all gifted with a specific sexual gift or in this film's case, mutation, which gives each woman a unique appeal (one of the three girls is unable to satisfy men normally and must turn to the powers of the tongue).

A romantic comedy classic in every sense of the words, Our Sister Hedy depicts the intriguing love affairs of four sisters who would easily remind one of the four female protagonists in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. But scriptwriter and director Tao Qin was clever enough to update Alcott's novel to contemporary Hong Kong in the late fifties, adding to it "one car-crash, a two-way catfight, three musical numbers and a long series of parties, around which major drama always occur" (quoted from the booking brochure of Back to Dreamland, Cathay Retrospective, organized by the Hong Kong Film Archive). The film features one of the first (and finest) performances of Julie Yeh Feng and Jeanette Lin Cui. The former gives an almost unprecedented portrayal of a nymph-like compulsive seductress in the Hong Kong cinema, whilst the latter, a tomboyish young woman who is more interested in arranging the marriages for her elder sisters than her own.

Its enormous popularity prompted a sequel, Wedding Bells for Hedy in 1959.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Is that so? But guns sure make people trigger-happy, like power readily fills people with the urge to abuse it. The runaway pistol, which has a life of its own, travels from the underbelly of Mongkok to seedy Shenzhen across the border. It finds its way into the hands of a motley crowd of characters, and claims the lives of a sex worker, a small-time hood, troubled teenagers, and innocent and not-so-innocent bystanders, in manners absurd and inglorious. In his debut as director, Lam Wah Chuen, long-time collaborator of Fruit Chan as cinematographer and composer, fashions a one-of-a-kind road movie that is a complex kaleidoscope of images, and with an intensity bordering on the subversive and the unreal. A cruel fairy tale about a city on the verge of moral meltdown.

How does an uneducated, poor son of a prostitute rise to simultaneously become a rich baron of the Manchu court, as well as a high officer of the opposition forces? For Bond (Chow), all it takes is a little tact and ambition. It's getting his mother to change jobs which is the tough part.

Visually sumptuous parody of Hong Kong's recent swordplay epics, the smart aleck Stephen Chow succeeds as the improbably named Wilson Bond, a fast-thinking lowlife who gets caught up in one tangled court intrigue after another, pledging his loyalty to whoever is threatening him at the moment and playing all sides off against each other while trying to figure a way out of the incredible mess he's in.

I NOT STUPID was #1 for 4 consecutive weeks from its release on 9 February 2002, the weekend before Chinese New Year. During the week-long school holidays in March, schools and students flocked to see I NOT STUPID. Community groups and volunteers also brought the elderly Singaporeans to watch this movie they have heard and read so much about. It has been some time since there has been a movie that both young and old Singaporeans alike are able to share and connect.

Says Mr Daniel Yun, CEO of Raintree Pictures, "I NOT STUPID comes at the most crucial point in time for the Singapore movie industry. It restores faith both for the local viewers and the local practitioners. For viewers, there is assurance of quality in local movies and they are now aware that the local filmmakers do improve with time and experience. For the practitioners, there is a clear vote of confidence from the public to go on. It is not unlike a long distance runner receiving some midway encouragement, taking in some much needed water to continue towards the finishing line.

Jack Neo has chosen to use the simple yet hilarious story of three young children and their families from different social backgrounds to create a social satire touching on issues of education streaming, the importance of the Chinese language and the focus on academic excellence.

Kok Pin, Boon Hock and Terry are classmates in EM3. In Singapore, that means that at the age of 12, the government has decided that they are not as academically inclined as their peers who have been placed in an express or normal stream. Kok Pin is creative and a born artist but his parents would rather he focus on his Maths and Sciences. Boon Hock comes from a poor family and needs to balance school and helping out at the hawker stall. Terry, a spoilt brat is just too lazy a student. Much misunderstanding occurs amongst the friends because Terry has been brought up to mind his own business and not stand up for his friends. But when Terry, despite his fear of pain, offers to donate his bone marrow to save Kok Pin's mother at a crucial moment, the boys realise their true friendship.

While the three children suffer from the pressure of school, their parents have another set of problems.

Kok Pin's mother is passed over for a promotion because she does not have a university degree. His father, a Chinese advertising copywriter is struggling to move ahead at work where Caucasian and the English language means authority at most advertising agencies. Terry's father family business runs into a crisis when a competitive "Ba Gua" company from Taiwan sets up a chain of shops in Singapore .

When Terry's father goes to an agency to seek advertising help for his ailing business due to a newly opened "Ba Gua" (Pork Jerky) store from Taiwan, he opts for a creative from the Creative Director rather than a better campaign by Kok Pin's father because of an unpleasant encounter with Kok Pin's father earlier. The Chinese New Year "Ba Gua" campaign ends up in a mess. Kok Pin's father decides to help Terry's father and convinces him to try his campaign. It was a big success.

Following the story of Kok Pin's and Terry's family, we see the different issues faced by Singapore families in a light hearted sometimes almost silly situation.

Keen on showing that pop-stars are like anybody else, Koo sends out a cattle call to make a star out of "the average guy"; Lam, who's light in the breast department, tries out as a guy and wins the contest! She moves into the couple's evenly split apartment, and it's not long before Rose falls in love with her; and no sooner does that get straightened out then Koo falls for her, too (all the while wondering whether he's become gay or not).
Storm Riders -HK Release

Storm Riders is a riveting martial arts film about the friendship and rivalry between two swordsmen, Wind and Cloud, brought up together by a warlord to help him fulfill a prophesy of ruling the world. Caught between them is the one woman they both love.

The long anticipated new film Storm Riders (Fung Won) which features two top pop stars, Dior Cheng Yi Kin, Aaron Kwok, was released in Hong Kong to great acclaim and eager audiences. It took over a year to produce. The film is adopted from the popular cartoon "Fung Won" and is a classic sword fight movie with many amazing special effects (the reason it has taken so long to make).

Warlord Conquer (Sonny Chiba) is told that if he can locate and train two boys with particular star charts then his Conqueror Clan will be invincible for ten years. Conquer finds the two boys, but is obliged to get violent when their parents prove old-fashioned about forking over their sole heirs.

Conquer brings them up as his own, along with his legitimate son Frost and daughter Charity. Ten years pass, and our two orphans are mighty warriors. Wind (Ekin Cheng) is obedient but Cloud (Aaron Kwok) is a bit of a brooder, especially when Conquer announces the marriage of Charity (Kristy Yeung) to Wind. Nothing causes a war in the world of martial arts like a love triangle and, before you can say "Whirling Water Attack", Cloud is storming the wedding to steal the bride.

Eventually, the two boys unite and fight Conquer. Despite the presence of big name actors and actresses, possibly the biggest star of this film is special effects company Centro, which set new standards for the future of Hong Kong Cinema.
